The Clone Wars breaks with tradition by being the first animated
Star Wars movie, the first distributed by Warner Bros, and the first to not be directed by George Lucas since Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
The Clone Wars is set between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The movie is intended to be an introduction to the TV series set to debut in late 2008. All the characters from the preceding movie have returned in animated form, including Anakin, Padme, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, Count Dooku, Obi-Wan, R2-D2 and C3PO. However most of the characters are voiced by new actors.
The plot begins with a narrator telling us how the Clone Wars came to be, rather than the much-parodied rolling text in the preceding films. The movie then takes us through the Clone Wars as they spread throughout the galaxy. The Jedi Knights once again fight to regain order and restore peace.
The forces of the dark side have the upper hand as the Galactic Republic struggles against the Separatists and their army of droids. Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano find themselves in direct conflict with evil Jabba the Hutt. However Count Dooku and his evil cohorts, including Asajj Ventress, also stand in Anakin's and Ahsoka's way. Ultimately, they fail. On the Clone Wars front, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi lead the never-ending clone army in their quest to overcome the dark side of the force.
Reaction to Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been mixed but the movie has still earned over $55 million world wide, although that figure is well below earnings on previous films. The movie has proved to be most popular with younger audiences with
Clone Wars toys becoming much sought after, along with the all
Star Wars games.
